Internet powerhouse Akamai Technologies has released its first “State of the Internet” report. Drawing from data gathered across its global server network, it attempts to dissect trends such as attack traffic, broadband adoption, and relevant information. As noted in its executive summary, this inaugural report is based on data collected from the January to March 2008 time period.

Part of the data yielded no surprises, such as attacks targeting ports used by Microsoft’s SQL Server or NETBIOS. Surely you don’t mean to say that these ports are still wide-open to the Internet on your network?

Anyway, what I found interesting is the (relatively) considerable percentage of attacks that target various administration software as well as the VNC protocol. It would probably be prudent to shield such services behind a VPN or SSH tunnel.
