The picture passwords that make security codes easier to remember but harder to copy
For those who struggle to remember their passwords and bank pins it could be the answer to their prayers

New software has been developed for the latest mobile phones and handheld computers which uses pictures instead of letters and numbers for security codes

The idea could be expanded into other areas, as the images will be harder than text passwords to copy by fraudsters, and easier to remember

The BDAS software allows a user to join dots on a picture to create a personal password

Researchers at Newcastle University were showcasing their Background Draw-a-Secret (BDAS) technology on a range of gadgets including i-phones, laptops and PDAs at the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition in London

Dr Jeff Yan, from the school of computing science, said: 'These days we have passwords and Pins to remember in so many aspects of our lives

'And they are all coming under increasing threat from ever-more sophisticated thieves

'Studies have shown that people find it easier to remember images than words or numbers and our system has proven over 1,000 times more secure than people's normal passwords

'At the Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition we will be letting the public try out a system which we think will be part of everyday life in just a few years

The 'graphical passwords' are drawn over a background, such as a photo of a flower, a map, a playing card or the night sky

The computer remembers the number of 'pen' strokes used, where the image was started and the order in which they were made

The system allows users to create passwords which are much more complex than the traditional numeric or alphabetical versions

Dr Yan added: 'Choosing the right background image is very important for memory and security

'A big crowd scene is too complex and a picture of stars might be too obvious with people just joining up the brightest ones

'The best ones tend to be images such as playing cards. Our new system will require a little more effort for people to set up their passwords but once that is done we are confident that people, other than criminals, will find it easier to use

The Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition opens today and showcases cutting-edge research in science and engineering from across the UK

The exhibition, which runs until July 3, is held annually at the Royal Society, the UK's national academy of science and more than 4,000 visitors are expected to attend.
